NWHI Monk Seals Starving!

2009 – Lowest pupping rate in NWHI in the past decade
2008 138 pups NWHI
2009 119 pups NWHI

The monk seal population is dwindling towards extinction with a 4 percent annual decline. The Main Hawaiian Islands provide one of the best chances for the recovery of the monk seal.

In 2009 15 pups were born in the Main Hawaiian Islands including
6 pups on Molokai
5 pups on Kauai
2 pups on Oahu
2 pups on Maui

Revising critical habitat to protect pupping and foraging areas on the Main Hawaiian Islands is vital for the continued existence of this critically imperiled species
