Kilauea Neighborhood Association Meeting 7 p.m. Tuesday May 4 Kilauea Neighborhood Center

Help Protect Lepeuli!
(Larsen’s Beach)

In February 2010, the Department of Land and Natural Resources approved Conservation District Use Application (CDUA) KA-3525 for Paradise Ranch to perform landscaping at Lepeuli (Larsen’s Beach), which involves installation of a fence, pasture management, and “habitat improvement,” without full consideration of how this might impact and possibly destroy the important ecosystems, cultural prominence, and historic access trails inherent in the area. No public hearing was held by DLNR  to discuss the permit application.

The Kilauea Neighborhood Association (KNA), along with Surfrider Foundation, Malama Moloa`a, Aunty Loke Would Go, and Hope & Tim Kallai, are appealing the DLNR’s decision to approve this permit.

Join us NEXT TUESDAY, MAY 4, 2010, @ 7:00pm
Kilauea Neighborhood Center
at KNA’s monthly meeting when Dr. Carl Berg, Surfrider Foundation representative, professional ecologist and long-time resident of the North Shore, will discuss the special significance of the marine and coastal environments at Lepeuli (Larsen’s Beach).  A pupping area for the Hawaiian monk seals and a nesting area for the sea turtles, this area is one of the best remaining native Hawaiian coastal ecosystems and reef system, and we must protect it!  In addition, Hope Kallai will discuss recent findings on  cultural and archaeological aspects of the Ahupua’a that were not considered in the issuance of the permit.
Come find out more about the appeal and share you stories, history and knowledge about the area.
